Spirits and flavored alcoholic beverages from the Marche region.
The tradition of flavored spirits in the Marche region began in the Middle Ages, especially in convents, where local herbs were used for medicinal purposes. Over time, this knowledge was passed on to farmers and has persisted to this day.
Among the main products is mistrà Varnelli, a dry and highly aromatic aniseed liqueur, popular since the 17th century. Similar but sweeter is Anisetta Meletti, created in Ascoli Piceno in 1870.
Another important product is "vino cotto", made from boiled must and known since Roman times, with a sweet and intense flavor.
Then we find visner, made with sour cherries, sugar, and red wine, typical of the peasant tradition. Finally, there are rosolio and "amari alle erbe", aromatic liqueurs created in convents and often used as digestifs.
These beverages still represent an important part of the culture of the Marche region today.
